Instagram's 'Your Algorithm' Now Reaches Your Feed. Indian Creators Should Pick

Instagram made a quiet change this month that matters more than most of its flashy feature drops. Its "Your Algorithm" controls, which started on Reels last year and moved to Explore in April, are now rolling out to the main feed. In plain words: the person scrolling can tell Instagram "show me more of this" or "less of that." And they can wipe the slate clean whenever they want.

For creators, that is a real shift. The feed used to be a machine you tried to guess and please. Now a slice of it is a dial your audience holds.

What actually changed

Open Instagram, go to Settings, then Content preferences. You will find options to add or remove interests, turn certain topics up or down, and reset your recommendations completely. The reset wipes your history across Reels, Explore, and suggested posts. After that the app starts fresh and rebuilds from what you do next, usually within a day or two.

This is not brand new tech. Instagram tested it on Reels in late 2025 and brought it to Explore around April 2026. The July move is that it is now reaching the feed, the screen most people open first. So the control is no longer buried in a corner nobody visits.

Why this matters for creators

Think about what the topic dial does. When a viewer turns up "home workouts" or "Kannada food" or "small business tips," Instagram has to decide which accounts belong in that bucket. If your account clearly sits in one topic, you are an easy pick. If your grid mixes travel, gym, gadgets, and memes, the app has a harder time filing you, and you can get skipped on the exact request a viewer just made.

There is a second change worth knowing. In its July updates, Instagram said it is normalizing for account size. That is a fancy way of saying smaller accounts get a fairer shot at reach instead of losing every time to big pages. If you have 800 followers and you keep making one kind of thing well, this is good news. Reach now leans more on whether early viewers actually watch, and less on how big you already are.

Put the two together. A clear topic plus strong early watch time is the mix the app is rewarding right now.

The one thing to do this week

Pick one topic and make it impossible to miss.

Not "lifestyle." Something a stranger could repeat back to you. "Budget skincare for oily skin in Indian weather." "Home Gujarati thali recipes." "Excel tricks for shop owners." The tighter, the better.

Then push that topic into every spot the app and a new viewer both read:

  • Your bio: say the topic in the first line, not your job title.

  • Your first three seconds: show or say what the video is about before anything else.

  • Your caption: use the plain words people would type in search, like "beginner running plan" instead of "let us get moving."

  • On screen text: one clear line that names the subject.

  • Your last nine posts: someone who opens your profile should guess your topic in about five seconds.

You are not doing this for a hashtag. You are doing it so Instagram files you under the right topic, and so a person who dials that topic up actually gets you.

Small brands, same rule

If you run a salon, a cloud kitchen, or a clothing label, this applies to you too. Your feed should read as one clear thing. A salon that posts hair, food reviews, and travel confuses both the app and the customer. Pick the service you want to sell most and let the grid say it loudly. When a local user dials up "bridal makeup" in your city, you want to be the obvious answer.

One thing to watch out for

The reset button cuts both ways. A bored follower can wipe their history and stop seeing you overnight. So do not lean on being "the account they used to watch." That habit is easier to break now.

The fix is boring but it works: give a reason to come back. A series people wait for. A weekly format. A clear promise like "cheap recipes every Sunday." When your value is a routine and not one lucky viral hit, a reset does not erase you, because the viewer goes looking for you again.

A quick checklist

  • Can a stranger name your topic in five seconds from your grid? If not, tighten it.

  • Does your bio first line say the topic in plain words?

  • Do your recent reels hook in the first three seconds?

  • Are your captions written the way people search, not the way brands talk?

  • Do you have one repeatable format people can expect?

None of this needs new gear or a bigger budget. It is mostly a decision to stop being a little bit of everything.

The creators who do well here will not be the loudest. They will be the ones Instagram can describe in one line. If you cannot say your topic in a single sentence yet, that is your work for this week.
